Catching up with the garden

Daylilies are some of my favorite flowers; I love their bright yellow color, recurring bloom, not to mention very low maintenance. I was pleasantly surprised this spring when I discovered we had some daylilies growing at the end of our driveway.

We spent quite a bit of time this weekend working out in the garden, repotting plants, weeding (which is endless - why do weeds seem to grow so much faster than everything else?), and removing pine bark chips in favor of mulch. Things are looking pretty good for the moment.

My little potted annual flowers have fared a whole lot better than the rose bushes, which were higher maintenance than I realized. We only moved into this house in November so this is our first spring/summer here; it's been to discover what plants are in the garden. In our last house, we only had some deckspace for pots. Not only have I been pruning the rose bushes and weeding frequently, but we've also had to deal with some Japanese beetles that decided to make their home in our rose bushes. They seem to have moved on for the most part now, but at some points in July, it was like "Bug Attack" in our backyard.
